The objective of POSEIDON is to develop a methodology that foster the transition of existing districts into PEDs, by combining solutions that address energy, environmental and social aspects of district sustainability, and tackle both buildings and public spaces issues.

Districts characteristics vary considerably depending on the city, and the locality must be considered in order to select appropriate solutions that enable PEDs effective operationalization.

Therefore, POSEIDON focuses on the development of a methodology for Mediterranean cities which, in addition to having similar climatic characteristics, share common social customs and lifestyles

The ped
paradigm

PEDs represent a paradigm shift and may constitute a crucial piece of the puzzle to achieve Cities Mission and reach the ambitious targets of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions reductions set out at global and European scales.

However, their deployment within European cities is currently facing a set of diverse and complex challenges, mainly arising from their novelty and the lack of practical experience.

In that sense, there is a clear need for translating concepts and strategies into instruments that support the design, planning and operation of PEDs.

Our
purpose

Through the rapid urbanization process of the last decades, it seems clear that cities are, on a global scale, key components of the necessary transition towards environmental and social sustainability.

In particular, the urban energy transition constitutes a central axis within this strategy, highlighted in the new European Horizon Europe framework and national plans of most member countries. The gap between the current situation in cities and the ambitious targets set out in these documents, is huge and, in this context, Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) represent an innovative and powerful instrument that could boost urban energy transformation.

Indeed, by addressing the challenge of urban transition from a local basis, they open the way for innovative and tailored initiatives, in which citizens can play a key role.

POSEIDON focuses on the development of a methodology for Mediterranean cities. By doing so, the present project aims to:

1) support Mediterranean local authorities in the design and implementation of PEDs;

2) promote the integration of PEDs in urban planning strategies of Mediterranean cities;

3) involve citizens in the energy transition of their districts.

The methodology will enable to execute a process in seven steps and will be based on a set of guides and tools.
